🛍️ Shopping & Errands: Watch Out for Monday and Wednesday Closures!
In Pordenone, we value a relaxed pace of life. While exploring our historic center, you might find some shop shutters down on days you wouldn't expect. Here is how to plan your shopping like a local:
- Mondays (Retail Rest Day): Most clothing boutiques, independent shops, and salons in the city center are closed on Monday mornings. They usually open in the afternoon, around 3:30 PM or 4:00 PM.
- Wednesdays (Service Half-Day): Many local service providers, offices, and independent artisans choose to close on Wednesday afternoons for their mid-week break.
Local Tip: For the best shopping experience, plan your boutique visits from Tuesday to Saturday afternoon. To combine shopping with a taste of local life, explore the city center on Wednesday or Saturday mornings when the bustling street market is in full swing.

🛍️ Shopping & Dining in Pordenone: The Ultimate Guide for Visitors
Welcome to Pordenone! Here is a quick guide to local opening hours, markets, dining habits, and tipping etiquette.
🕒 Shop Opening Hours
Italian shops often observe a traditional afternoon break.
- Downtown Boutiques:
- Winter: 09:00 – 12:30 and 15:30 – 19:30 (Closed Sunday & Monday morning).
- Summer: 09:00 – 13:00 and 16:00 – 20:00 (Closed Sunday). Shops open and close later to avoid the afternoon heat.
- Global Brands & Chains: Big stores in the city center do not close for lunch. They stay open continuously from 09:30 to 19:30.
- Shopping Malls: Large malls outside the center (Centro Meduna or Granfiume) are open all day from 09:00 to 20:30/21:00, including Sundays.
🛒 Grocery Stores & Supermarkets
If you need to stock up the fridge at your holiday home, the main supermarkets in town offer very flexible hours.
- Coop (Via della Tessitura, 11): A convenient supermarket just a short walk from the Casa di Anna.
- Monday to Friday: 08:30 – 13:00 and 15:30 – 19:30 (observes an afternoon break)
- Saturday: 08:30 – 19:30 (open all day)
- Sunday: Closed
- Pam Supermarket (Viale Michelangelo Grigoletti, 74): A larger supermarket located on one of the city's main avenues, perfect for a big grocery run.
- Monday to Saturday: 08:30 – 20:00 (open all day)
- Sunday: 09:00 – 20:00 (open all day)
Smaller local grocery stores in the very center of the city are typically closed on Sundays.
🥦 Outdoor Markets (Mercato Cittadino)
To experience the true local lifestyle, visit the traditional open-air market right in the historic center (around Piazza XX Settembre). It is perfect for fresh food, cheese, and clothing.
- Days: Every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
- Hours: 07:30 – 12:30 (arrive before noon for the best selection).
🍝 Restaurant Dining Hours
Italians eat later than in many other countries, and restaurant kitchens have strict operating hours.
- Lunch: Usually served from 12:00 to 14:30.
- Dinner: Usually served from 19:00 to 23:00 (Italians typically dine around 20:30).
- Between Meals: Most restaurant kitchens close between 15:00 and 19:00. If you are hungry, head to a local café or bakery.
💶 Tipping Etiquette in Italy
Tipping is not mandatory and is not expected in Italy.
- The "Coperto": Your restaurant bill will include a small fixed charge called Coperto (usually €1.50 to €3.00 per person). This covers bread, tableware, and service.
- How to Tip: If the service was exceptional, leaving €1 or €2 per person in cash on the table is a highly appreciated gesture. You cannot add a tip to a credit card payment.
✨ Local Summer Tip
If you visit Pordenone in July or August, do not miss "Giovedì sotto le Stelle" (Thursdays under the Stars). Every Thursday night, downtown shops stay open until 23:00 (11 PM) with outdoor music, events, and a vibrant atmosphere!
🚗 Parking in Pordenone: Colors, Rates, and Free Spots
Parking in a new city can be tricky, but Pordenone is actually very visitor-friendly! Here is what you need to know about parking lines, rates, and where to find the best spots.
Understanding the Parking Colors
* **Blue Lines (Pay & Display):** Paid parking. You will need to buy a ticket from the nearby ticket machine (paying with coins, cards, or parking apps like EasyPark) and place it clearly on your dashboard. Rates generally range from **€0.80 to €1.20 per hour** depending on how close you are to the historic center.
* **White Lines (Free):** Totally free! Just park your car and you are good to go.
* **Yellow Lines:** Strictly reserved for residents, disabled card holders, or loading zones. *Avoid parking here to prevent getting fined!
💡 Pro Tip: Marcolin Car Park (Piazzale Filanda Marcolin)
> Looking for the ultimate budget hack? The **Marcolin Car Park** is located just a 5-minute walk from the train station and the city center. It is divided into two sections:
> * **Free Area (No limits):** Park here for as long as you want without paying a single cent.
> * **Parking Disc Area ("Disco Orario"):** Other sections of the lot are free but require a parking disc (*disco orario*). Just set your arrival time on the disc and display it on your dashboard—it grants you free parking for a limited time (usually 1 hour or 90 minutes).

Sending Love from Pordenone: The Hunt for the Red Mailboxes 📬
There is something incredibly magical about sending a handwritten postcard to your loved ones while traveling. Choosing the perfect card, finding a cozy spot in Pordenone's historic Corso Vittorio Emanuele II to write it over an espresso, and sending it off is a classic holiday ritual.
If you are planning to send some paper love back home during your stay at our holiday home, here is a quick "insider guide" to make sure your postcards actually make it to their destination!
Step 1: Getting Your Postcards and Stamps (Francobolli)
You can find beautiful postcards in local bookshops (librerie) and souvenir stands around the city center.
However, do not go to a souvenir shop for stamps. In Italy, stamps (francobolli) are sold at official Tabacchi shops. You can recognize them easily by the large black or blue signs outside with a big white "T". Just walk in and ask for:
"Francobolli per l'estero, per favore" (Stamps for abroad, please)
(Make sure to specify if you are sending them within Europe, to the US, or elsewhere, as the rates change!)
Step 2: The Plot Twist — Where are the Mailboxes? 🔎
Once your postcard is stamped and ready, you might naturally start looking around the streets for a mailbox (buca delle lettere). This is where things get tricky: they are incredibly hard to spot on the streets of Pordenone!
Unlike many other European cities, you won't find red postboxes on every corner. But don't worry, they do exist!
To save you from wandering around aimlessly, here are the easiest ways to mail your cards:
- The Main Post Office (Poste Italiane): The most reliable spot is the post office in Pordenone, located for exemple you find one on Via Vendramino Candiani, 6. Just outside the entrance, you will find the classic red double-slot mailboxes (one slot for Per la città / local mail, and one for Per tutte le altre destinazioni / everywhere else).
- The Tabacchi Shops: Sometimes, the very same Tabacchi where you buy your stamps will have a small red metal mailbox right inside or just outside their door. You can always ask the shopkeeper: "Posso lasciarla qui?" (Can I leave it here?).
- Leave it with Us! If you are running out of time or don't want to hunt down a mailbox during your sightseeing, just leave your stamped postcards on the kitchen table when you check out of our holiday home. We will be more than happy to drop them in the mail for you!
Happy writing, and enjoy every moment of your stay in beautiful Pordenone!
Driving around Pordenone: Motorway & Toll Guide 🗺️🚗
Driving around Pordenone is straightforward, but if you are new to Italian roads, navigating the motorways (highways) and toll systems can feel a bit confusing at first. 🚦
Here is a quick, practical guide to help you get around Pordenone by car, followed by a useful vocabulary list. 📝
🛣️ Driving Around Pordenone: The A28 Motorway
Pordenone is directly served by the A28 motorway (Autostrada A28), which connects Portogruaro (linking to the A4 towards Venice 🇮🇹 or Trieste ⚓) to Conegliano (linking to the A27 towards Belluno and the Dolomites 🏔️). This makes Pordenone incredibly well-connected!
Most highways in Italy are toll roads. When you enter the motorway, you will pass through a toll station where you must take a ticket 🎫. When you exit, you will return the ticket and pay the toll based on the distance you traveled. 🛣️
💳 Tolls and Payment Methods
When approaching a toll booth (casello), look at the signs above the lanes. They are color-coded to show how you can pay:
- 🟡 Yellow Lanes (Telepass): These are strictly for drivers with an electronic transponder (Telepass). Do not enter these lanes unless you have the device installed in your car, as the barrier will not open! 🚫
- 🔵 Blue Lanes (Carte): These lanes are dedicated to credit, debit, or prepaid cards (such as Viacard). They are fast, automated, and do not require a PIN. 💳
- ⚪ White Lanes (Cash/Contanti):
- If you see a sign with a hand holding bank notes, a human operator is present to take cash or cards 👤.
- If you see a sign with just coins and notes falling into a machine, it is an automated cash machine that gives change 🪙.
🗣️ Essential Driving Vocabulary (Italian - English)
To help you navigate the roads like a local, here is a quick reference table of essential road terms:
Autostrada 🛣️ | Motorway
Strada statale (SS) 🗺️ | State road / National road | Free to use
Casello 🚧 | Toll booth / Toll station | Where you take a ticket or pay.
Pedaggio 🪙 | Toll (payment) | The fee you pay to use the autostrada.
In contanti 💵 | In cash.
Carta di credito 💳 | Credit card.
Biglietto 🎫 | Ticket | Don't lose this! You need it to pay at the exit.
Uscita 🚪 | Exit.
Area di servizio ☕ | Service station / Rest stop | Great for a quick espresso or to refuel ⛽
💡 Host Tip: If you ever get stuck at an automated toll barrier, do not reverse! 🚫 It is very dangerous. Simply press the red "Help" (Aiuto) button on the machine. An operator will speak to you through the intercom 📞
